Essential Steps to Becoming an IQP

If you have a specialist trade background in specificed systems, you may be eligible to become an Independent Qualified Person (IQP). With six (6) IQP registers across New Zealand, the process is locally based.

In addition to your trade expertise, you’ll need the right compliance training. That’s where we come in. 

The steps

  • Meet the Trade Qualifications and Experience Requirements
    To become an IQP,  you must already have a relevant trade qualification and significant experience with specified building systems

  • Verify your eligibility
    Ensure you meet the eligibility criteria for your local IQP register. Each region in New Zealand has its own IQP register with specific approval requirements.
    1. Connect with the registrars early
    2. Download the application criteria and check against it

  • Get Bolt on Compliance Training
    Regardless of your trade, all IQPs must master core compliance requirements, including:
    1. The Building Act 2004 
    – Understanding legal obligations
    2. The BWOF Process – Roles, responsibilities, and compliance timeline
    3. Compliance Schedules & Reporting – 12As, SRaDs, and maintaining records
    4. Directing Technical Work – Managing remedial actions effectively
